Landfill leachate is an exceptionally complex, highly polluted, and notoriously difficult-to-treat wastewater generated from the fermentation, precipitation scouring, and internal biochemical reactions within landfills or waste piles. It is widely recognized as a significant challenge in the water treatment sector. Its water quality is characterized by high levels of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, salinity, and toxicity. Furthermore, both its quality and quantity fluctuate drastically with landfill age and seasonal climate. The wastewater contains not only large amounts of refractory organic matter such as humic and fulvic acids but also high concentrations of heavy metals, halogenated compounds, microbial toxins, and inorganic salts that are difficult for conventional biological systems to process. Employing mainstream processes like "biological treatment + membrane treatment (NF/RO)" often faces systemic challenges, including difficulties in starting biological systems, inhibition from high ammonia and salinity, membrane fouling and scaling, and the production of complex concentrate streams that are hard to dispose of.
To address the core challenges of landfill leachate—its extremely complex composition, strong inhibitory toxicity, and narrow window for biological treatment—the CQDHX SERIES EO Electrochemical Oxidation Equipment, developed and manufactured by our company (AA&SS AQUA HITECH CO., LTD.), generates potent oxidizing substances like hydroxyl radicals directly through electrocatalytic action. This effectively breaks down the complex molecular structures of refractory organics in the leachate, converting them into smaller, more biodegradable molecules or mineralizing them completely. The key advantages are that the entire advanced oxidation process operates without adding any external chemical agents, avoiding the extra cost, operational risks, and potential secondary pollutants associated with dosing chemicals. Moreover, this purely electrochemical process does not generate chemical sludge or new concentrate, only transforming and removing the original pollutants. This offers an innovative approach to solving the persistent challenge of concentrate management after traditional membrane processes.
The wastewater first undergoes pretreatment, including equalization, ammonia stripping (for high-ammonia leachate), and sedimentation to remove some suspended solids, adjust pH, and reduce the ammonia load. It then enters the front-end EC Electrochemical Equipment. The micro-flocculants generated electrolytically efficiently remove colloids, some color, and certain heavy metals, while also beginning to degrade some organics through redox reactions. This improves overall water quality and reduces the load on subsequent treatment stages.
The pretreated effluent, whose core pollutants are now dissolved refractory humic substances and specific toxic organics, enters the CQDHX SERIES EO Electrochemical Oxidation Equipment. Here, intense electrochemical oxidation deeply degrades persistent organic pollutants, significantly reducing their biological toxicity. Our equipment is specially optimized for the high salinity and chloride content of leachate. It can utilize the chloride ions already present to generate synergistic active chlorine species in-situ, enabling efficient pollutant removal with lower energy consumption. This makes it particularly suitable for treating mature leachate, which is hard for biological systems to handle, or for use as an advanced polishing unit.
Finally, the effluent treated by the CQDHX SERIES EO equipment has substantially lower biological toxicity and refractory organic content. It can safely be directed to or recycled through subsequent biological treatment systems (e.g., MBR) for stable nutrient removal, or combined with membrane systems to achieve compliant discharge. This solution is especially effective for leachate with very poor biodegradability, for emergency treatment of membrane concentrate, or as a reinforcement unit for existing, non-compliant treatment systems.
By utilizing our CQDHX SERIES EO Electrochemical Oxidation Equipment in a clean operational mode—requiring no chemical addition and generating no chemical sludge or new concentrate—we efficiently overcome the bottleneck of treating refractory toxic organics in leachate. This not only enhances the overall treatment efficiency and stability but also provides crucial technical support for solving the final challenge in leachate management: concentrate treatment. It contributes significantly to the environmental advancement and sustainable development of the solid waste disposal sector.
For wastewater with special characteristics or specific treatment objectives, our engineering team provides dedicated technical support and customized solutions.
